If your child is sitting a selective school maths test, you already know it is a different beast from regular school maths. The questions move faster, the reasoning is harder, and the time pressure is intense.

What we mean by "selective school maths test"

Different states run different selective entry tests, but the core maths challenge looks broadly similar.

  • NSW Selective High School Placement Test. Sat in Year 6 for entry to Year 7. Includes a Mathematical Reasoning section with around 35 questions in 40 minutes.
  • Victorian Selective Entry High Schools test. Sat in Year 8 for entry to Year 9. Includes a Quantitative Reasoning section.
  • Queensland Academies entry tests, ACT selective programs, WA Gifted and Talented testing. Each has its own format but tests similar mathematical thinking skills.

What they all share: the maths is not curriculum-heavy. You are not being tested on whether you have memorised Year 6 content. You are being tested on whether you can think mathematically under time pressure.

This is critically important. Parents who treat selective prep like extra schoolwork miss the point.

What the test actually measures

Selective maths tests are designed to identify students with strong reasoning ability, not students who have done the most tutoring. In practice, the questions cluster into a few types.

Pattern recognition. Number patterns, shape patterns, sequences. Spotting the rule, then extending it.

Logic puzzles. Often word problems with constraints. "If A is taller than B, and C is shorter than B, who is the shortest?" Then the same logic, but harder, with five variables.

Quick arithmetic with a twist. Not just calculation, but figuring out the most efficient path to the answer. The slow way works but you will not finish the test.

Spatial reasoning. Folding nets, counting cubes, rotating shapes mentally.

Word problems with multiple steps. Read carefully, extract the maths, do the work, sanity-check the answer.

Proportional thinking. Ratios, fractions, percentages, and how they relate. This is heavily tested and trips up students who only know procedures.

Notice what is missing: there is almost no algebra, no geometry proofs, no advanced curriculum content. The tests deliberately avoid material that gives an edge to students who have been pushed ahead in school.

What good preparation looks like

The mistake most parents make is treating selective prep as "do harder maths." That is not what the test rewards.

1. Start with reasoning, not content

Your child needs practice with the types of thinking the test asks for, not extra Year 7 content. Logic puzzles, pattern problems, ratio reasoning. These skills compound over months.

A good rule of thumb: if your prep material looks like school maths, it is probably the wrong material. Selective tests are closer to puzzle books than textbooks.

2. Build speed gradually

The time pressure is the test. Many capable students could solve every question if given an hour. They have 40 minutes, and they panic.

Build speed in stages:

  • First, can they do the question correctly with no time limit?
  • Then, can they do it in two minutes?
  • Then, can they do it in 60 seconds with the right strategy?

Speed without accuracy is worthless. Accuracy without speed does not pass.

3. Practice strategic skipping

This is the single biggest skill capable students lack. They get stuck on question 12, refuse to move on, and run out of time before reaching question 30 (which they could have done easily). Practice the discipline: spend 30 seconds, if no clear path, flag it, move on, come back at the end.

4. Do real practice tests under timed conditions

Buy or borrow past papers and run them as the real thing. Quiet room, no help, exact time limit. Then mark them together and analyse what went wrong. This is more valuable than ten times the volume of casual practice.

5. Mental maths fluency

Selective tests punish students who use a slow method. If your child still draws number lines to add 47 + 38, they will not finish. Five minutes of mental maths a day for six months makes a measurable difference.

Focus on:

  • Times tables to 12, instant recall
  • Adding two-digit numbers in the head
  • Common fraction-decimal-percentage equivalents (½ = 0.5 = 50%, ⅛ = 0.125, etc.)
  • Multiplying by 10, 100, 0.1, 0.01

The common traps

Tutoring centre dependency. Some Sydney and Melbourne tutoring centres run intensive selective prep programs, often charging thousands of dollars. Some are excellent, many are repetitive drills that build little real reasoning. The cost-benefit is mixed at best. Plenty of selective entrants prepared at home with the right resources.

Over-preparation. Twelve months of grinding can burn out a 10-year-old before the test. Six to nine months of consistent, varied practice is usually plenty.

Ignoring writing and reading. Most selective tests also include reading and writing components. Maths-focused families sometimes neglect these and get a shock at the result.

Treating it as life-defining. Plenty of brilliant Australian kids did not get into a selective school. Plenty of selective entrants are not brilliant. The test is one snapshot of one type of thinking on one morning. Help your child take it seriously without making it traumatic.

Practice without analysis. Doing 500 practice questions with no review of what went wrong builds bad habits faster than no practice at all. Quality over quantity, every time.

A realistic prep schedule

If the test is 6 months away:

  • Week 1-4: Diagnostic. Run a couple of past papers, untimed, to see what kinds of questions are weakest.
  • Month 2-4: Targeted practice on weak areas. Logic puzzles three times a week, mental maths daily, one timed paper a fortnight.
  • Month 5: Volume up. One timed paper a week. Detailed review of every wrong answer.
  • Month 6: Taper. Reduce volume in the last fortnight. Sleep, food, calm. The night before, no maths.

If the test is less than 3 months away:

  • Skip the diagnostic phase. Do one timed paper, identify the two or three biggest weaknesses, and focus exclusively on those.
  • Run timed papers weekly.
  • Stop introducing new techniques in the final two weeks. Consolidate what they have.
